MV Doulos Returns to Manila

The MV Doulos, also known as the Largest Floating Bookshop, is currently docked at the Manila South Harbour, Pier 13.  The world’s oldest active passenger ship arrived in Manila last Thursday, March 5, 2009.  The bookshop officially opened its doors to the public on Friday, March 6 and will close on March 30. Admission tickets cost 10 pesos per adult and children under 16 years old are admitted free.

MV Doulos carries thousands of books on board covering a diverse range of topics. You can get a book for as low as 50 units. The bookshop has a pricing system called “unit” which is equivalent to a peso (ie. 300 units = 300 pesos).  They offer a wide selection of books for children, so bring your kids along.

MV Doulos bookshop also carries a range of Muisc/CDs for 300 to 500+ units each. Most of the albums available are gospel/christian but there are also a couple of contemporary music, too.

Volunteers of the MV Doulos are looking forward to welcoming you onboard, so bring your family and friends and pay them a visit this March!

Youth Explode 2008

Did you know that 60% of filipinos do not own a Bible? That 70% of both teenagers and young professionals do not own a Bible? If we are to take the Bible as our ultimate guide to life, then this is not a very good sign.

In a survey done by the Philippine Bible Society not long ago, they gathered a collective reaction why these young people do not own a Bible. Here’s what they found out:

1. We don’t know where to start/how to read it.
2. We don’t understand our Bible version.
3. We do not see the relevance of the Bible in our lives.

For a country considered as a Christian nation, where there is bountiful supply of Bibles, i find these reasons very alarming. The issue here is no longer on the availability of the Bible, but the problem is the lack of advocacy and leaders that will teach this generation the importance of reading the Word of God.

It is in response to this reality that the Philippine Bible Society (PBS), together with the National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP), the Philippine Council for Evangelical Churches (PCEC), the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), through its Episcopal Commission on Youth (ECY), have rallied together to bring about the Youth Explode Series.

Youth Explode 2008 will happen on November 29 (Saturday) at the Folk Arts Theater. Filipino youth, regardless of denomination, will gather as one to fire up God’s Word among their generation. Come and let us join the battlecry of our youth!

Fast facts:

Did you know that the word Bible is from the Greek biblia, which is the plural form of biblion? Biblion is the diminutive of biblos (book), from byblos (papyrus). In ancient times papyrus was used to make the paper from which books were manufactured.

The words biblion and biblia are used in the Old Testament and the Apocrypha for the Scriptures (Daniel 9:2; 1 Maccabees 1:56; 3:48). By about the fifth century AD the Greek Church Fathers applied the term biblia to the whole of the Christian Scriptures. Later the word passed into the western church, and although it is really a plural neuter noun, it came to be used in Latin as a feminine singular. Thus “The Books” became by common consent “The Book.”

Support Filipino Writers

Would the copyright law protect a filipino writer from having his books photocopied (in very poor quality, i might add), scanned page by page, converted into pdf files, and uploaded on the internet by a fellow filipino?

With the kind of support filipino writers are getting these days, you’d start to wonder:

“Where did all the great minds go?”

Paradoxical Commandments

Have you ever had one of those days when you can’t understand why people act the way they do? No matter how hard you try, even if what you’re doing is right, things doesn’t fall into place and everything doesn’t make sense? During these times, it’s best to turn to God’s Word.  Reciting “The Paradoxical Commandments” would also help.

To my dear friend, who needs this badly today… below you’ll find the verses reportedly written on the wall in Mother Teresa’s room. They are originally composed by Kent Keith, but Mother Teresa did a wonderful job re-writing it. Read and be encouraged.

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you.
Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight.
Create anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, will often be forgotten.
Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough.
Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God.
It was NEVER between you and them anyway.

Here’s the Original Version:

The Paradoxical Commandments
by Dr. Kent M. Keith

1. People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway.
2. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway.
3. If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.
4. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.
5. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway.
6. The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds. Think big anyway.
7. People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway.
8. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.
9. People really need help but may attack you if you do help them. Help people anyway.
10. Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.
