Sun Tech Days Manila

Sun Tech Days 2007-2008, a Worldwide Developers Conference, started its Manila leg on June 17, 2008.  The three day conference held at the Shangri-La Hotel in Makati City was well attended by developers, java enthusiasts, and students.

Tim Boudreau, Senior Staff Engineer of Sun Microsystems, gave a warm NetBeans welcome and promoted Sun’s latest products and services.  Sang Shin, a very passionate Sun Evangelist showed developers how to maximize the various Sun IT products.  His humor was well received and appreciated during the track, “Using Netbeans for Web and Enterprise Development.”  Too bad the topic couldn’t hold some of the delegates’ attention, as some have started a hibernate session. Yes, we could hear loud snoring, people!  C’mon, we know Sun Microsystems encourage us to be productive and to maximize their services, but i don’t think catching forty winks during their conference was on that list.

Anyway, the track that i was eager to learn more about was entitled “Using NetBeans for Desktop Development” by Geertjan Wielenga, Technical Writer of Sun Microsystems.  Geertjan showed how NetBeans IDE can be the one-stop shop for all Swing desktop requirements.  His demo on the Matisse GUI Builder sort of inspired me to develop applications again, but this time for the desktop.  Geertjan also did a demo on a very cool application called JFugue, which was built on API.

Starting to sound a bit geeky? Ok, ok. It is a known fact that men have a stronger attraction to technology.  In a research done by Allan Fisher, President and CEO of Carnegie Technology Education, he said that women are attracted to computing basically for its social applications.  So, before you start giving me that look, let me state the real reason why i attended the conference, and that is to have my photo taken with the cute Java mascot, Duke.
